losing someone I love very much

(no music this time, in honor of my grandmother,
who cherishes peace and quiet)

My grandmother has been in the hospital for like 3 weeks now. It started out as a cold, then turned into bronchitis, then became pneumonia. They admitted her with a good prognosis, I mean she had fluid on her lungs, but they seemed confident that she would be all right in the end.

The bombarded the inflammation in her lungs with steroid treatments, and breathing treatments to help her get the oxygen she desperately needed. Her oxygen saturation was fluctuating but it seemed ok. She was tired a lot from coughing, but it was coming up and she seemed to be getting a little better. Then they told us that her kidneys weren't doing so well, so they discontinued the steroids, and she even told me she felt better after that.

The next day was a different story. Her kidneys weren't waking up and doing their job, so they talked about dialysis to hopefully kick start them running again. But the dialysis didn't do it's job, and she took several treatments that week, the didn't seem to do anything for her except exhaust her. She stopped eating. I got her to eat a little fruit, and drink a little tea, but she couldn't even look at the food let alone eat it.

She was getting worse and it seemed no matter what was done, she felt worse each day. She even looked it. Each day I've seen her, she looks weaker and weaker. She couldn't talk for even a few seconds without being out of breath. They took her up to the ICU unit to keep a better watch on her they said, but it was obvious that things were progressing faster. The doctors talked about how she might surprise them and be ok, but things were looking worse with each day. Best case scenario they said was she would be on dialysis and oxygen from here on out. Worst case, she wouldn't leave the hospital alive. It was hard to swallow but we hoped she would push through and get better.

Suddenly on Saturday, her blood pressure dropped. They had put her on a ventilator with constant oxygen feeding through a mask (which dried up and burned her face) and eventually a nose fed respirator, but she keeps breathing through her mouth. She says it feels like she can't get a breath if she doesn't breathe through her mouth as well as her nose.

They told us on Sunday that she was dying. They moved her from the ICU to another room on the fourth floor. We knew what was coming next. There was nothing left to do but let her go. They have stopped all medications, all insulin regiments, even the IV nutrients she needs from the lack of food. It is all about making her as comfortable as possible until the inevitable happens.

I went in today after work, and she could barely keep her eyes open, let alone speak. She is drifting in and out of consciousness, and was in pain and nauseous. She almost got sick several times, and they eventually came in later after everyone left and it was just me and Aunt Lisa, and gave her something for it. They have also started pushing IV morphine to help with the pain.

I tried so hard not to cry in front of her. I tried so hard to be rock hard and just be there for her tonight. I did cry for a long time after I watched my mother cry while holding her hand. My mother NEVER cries, and when she did today, it was immediate surrender on my part to the emotions I have held back for days now.

My grandfather told my brother the other day that not only is he losing his wife, but he is losing his best friend. They have been married for 65 years, and I can't imagine what he is going through on the inside. I really do feel bad for my mother and Aunt Lisa as well. They lost a sister this year, and now they are losing their mother.

Lisa is sleeping there tonight, and I will go in at 7 the morning and let her go home and shower so she can work. I took the day off, and I want to stay there with her as long as I can. IF she survives the night, it might be the last time I get to spend with her.

If she does go in her sleep tonight, I hope it is peacefully, and not painfully or in confusion.

Deja vu... again?!?!?

I took this picture earlier today, and within just a few hours a small area on the inside of my left leg began to hurt pretty badly. It seems like a blood vessel popped inside my leg and has left a pocket there that feels like it is full of blood or something. This has actually happened to me before, about 3 years ago. It turned out to be an infection inside my right leg. We had to excise it and drain it. It was so painful, and almost my entire right thigh was purple by the time we made it to the hospital. I'm hoping that this is not the same thing, but it's starting to look like it is. Its inflamed and hot to the touch. The tissue around it is swollen and tender. I have to open in the morning at work, and I think if this gets much worse I'll try to get into the doctor. The pain is already so bad it's hard to walk without limping to avoid pain. I also have a fever of 99.4, which is usually a sure sign of some sort of infection. WHY does this keep happening to me? It's starting to worry me that there is more infection somewhere else in my body that is spreading to other places and settling in. I've always been pretty prone to infection, but it's not like I wounded myself there and it got infected. I just woke up and it was there.I'm worried about the money too. We simply cannot afford another hospital visit right now.

To top it all off, I had nightmare after nightmare last night. I can't remember everything about each of them, but I woke up a lot of times, and woke up this morning feeling like I hadn't slept at all. Maybe the infection had something to do with it, I dunno. Maybe it was something I ate. Maybe I've just been really stressed and thinking too much about my internships coming up. I worry that I might not pass one test in particular. I mean I LIVE in it, and I've failed like that before. God please, PLEASE. I can't go through that kind of humiliation again, and lose my chance at a good career. I need this. And I don't want to let Aaron down. Or my family, but especially my mother. She is so proud of me, and I don't want to see that look of disappointment in her eyes anymore.

I'm gonna try to sleep, and hope I don't wake up with a purple inner left thigh.

I pretty much slept all day. lol Which is fine with me, it was my day off, and I needed it. I did have a dream last night though, that we lived in Alaska. It was beautiful there. So this morning, I have been thinking alot about the future. I graduate in about a year, and after I do, we have to make a decision on where we are gonna go. Stay in Memphis and work for a while, or move somewhere. Honestly, I want the fuck out of Memphis, for a while at least. I'd like to move to St. Louis. That way we aren't too far away for our families, but we will be too far away for the lazy annoying people to come visit. haha I'm horrible.

I've been watching InvaderZim and he's rubbing off on me. DISGUSTING HUMANS!!!

I gotta go shower for Ethics class tonight.

HAPPY NEW YEAR!!!

To all of those whom I love, I hope you have a happy, safe and wonderful New Year! I shall be sitting in my computer room, drinking myself under the desk. This is last era of Dan K., IF you know what I mean. I have to change it all; make it clean so thatI can have the life I want. Life has changed so much for me already, just in the last 2 years. Some things are the same, and many more are not. I am madly in love with a man that drives me stark raving mad, and I love every moment of it. My demon dog Yaya is thankfully happy and healthy. MY relationship with my family is so much better than in the past. Things dont change much there, but my ability to handle it has changed dramatically. My father is the most sober than he's ever been, and close to going to rehab to get even more help. School is amazing. I've learned so much, and have so much more to learn. I hope that all of the work Ive been putting into this pays off for us.

Things aren't all great. Aunt Barbara isn't doing so well right now. The whole cancer ordeal has really gotten to her health, and she just seems defeated already. I cry every time I talk about this. I can't imagine her not being there. Grandmother either. She is like the rock of our family, and I cant even think about what it'll be like. I don't want to deal with it, but I know I have to face it just like everything else.

Overall, this has been one of the best years I can remember. And we are still well on our way up.

Happy Holidays!!!

I do realize that it has been over half a month since I last wrote anything. To say the least, I have been very busy. School, family, home, work, and of course the holidays have kept me running. I just wanted to pop in and share some of the images from the digicam.

We did Aaron's 2 Christmas visits yesterday. His dad's family had theirs at 11am out in midtown. Aaron;s cousins live there and they have a very nice house, and 4 greats kids. They are all very sweet and like talking with me and Aaron. Last year we helped them build a rocket in the front yard, and this year we all sat and talked alot. We also watched some funny animal videos on youtube with them. They are very smart, extremely respectful, and have a ton of common sense. They have great parents. I can only hope that we have children half that sweet.

We ate like pigs, and then opened gifts. We got his dad a bunch of movies he really wanted. Aaron's dad got him some clothes, and a autographed book that he really liked about Dick Vitale. He got me (!!!)Season 3 of The Venture Brothers(!!!) haha

Then we went to his mom's house. She was alone for Christmas, except for the dogs. She was happy to have us over, and had even cooked a big ham and all the fixin's. So we ate again, and opened gifts. We got her movies that she wanted, including Harry Potter! lol She got us socks. no lie! and I loved them!!! She also got Aaron some clothes, and $100. She got me a freaking sweet 10 cup food processor. I'm gonna be able to make awesome salads with this thing.

Then tonight I went to my family's Christmas. Barbara had chemo yesterday, so she wasn't feeling well. I love her so much, and I want to see her happy again. She did smile when she hugged me; she seemed happy I was there. I felt bad that I didn't have a gift to give for the secret santa thing, but she made it all better. She literally put a coffee cup in a bag and handed it to me. It was so freaking funny. And sad that I didn't remember to get one. I felt bad. It's always my family I end up looking bad in front of. It drives me mad. f course,my grandafther counldn't letme visit without a lecture about being a pothead loser. But overall, it was ok. I got to talkto uncleKEn for a while, and my aunt Lisa was in a good mood. Grandmother and Pa aren't doing so well these days. I wish I had more time to hang out with them right now.

When I got home tonight, I found the batteries that I bought like a week ago for the camera. (and I finally found the camera) I hooked it all up and realized there are pictures still on here from back in August when Aaron, Yaya, and myself took a trip out to Richardson Landing in Tipton County to have a picnic on the river. It was flooded and overgrown, and we couldn't make it down to the riverbank to have the picnic, so we plopped down right in the parking lot of the landing and ate.
I also got a video of her panting, and she is so intent on catching every smell in the wind she cannot be stopped, even by the need to breathe!!! I love this dog.

Not just anybody

Is it a bad thing to say that I hope we have kids like these? Then we can watch videos like these!
